Alopecia Totalis
Alopecia totalis is a hair loss condition that is categorized between two other alopecia conditions: a lesser condition called alopecia areata, or patchy hair loss on the scalp and a more severe condition called alopecia universalis, which is complete body hair loss, including eyebrows, pubic hair, and the hair that grows from the scalp. This is an extremely common condition. Approximately, 1 in every 125,000 men and 1 in every 250,000 women have alopeciat or universalis. Most people with alopecia totalis are children and young adults under the age of 40; however there are cases of people over 40 who have alopecia totalis.
Although there is no definite cause for alopecia totalis, it is considered to be caused by an autoimmune disorder. The autoimmune condition associated with alopecia totalis causes the immune cells and antibodies within one’s body to attack ad destroy the hair follicles. There has been a study that indicates that 90 percent of people who suffer from alopecia had these follicle attacking antibodies. alopecia totalis is also thought to be a genetic and hereditary condition. Studies have shown that 20 percent of people who suffer from alopecia totalis have a family member with some form of alopecia as well.
Treatment for alopecia totalis is difficult. There is a very small chance of hair recovery. Treatments for alopecia totalis include topical ointments and injections, like corticosteroid. Corticosteroid injections must be a consistent process; however, 60 percent of people who try this treatment experience hair growth in approximately six weeks from the first injection. Many people try topical immunotherapy medications. One radical treatment is the use of squaric acid dibutylester, which induces a slight form of cotact dermatitis where hair has fallen out, resulting I an autoimmue response causing hair to re-grow in 12 to 24 weeks. However, many people do not experience hair regrowth.
